First, neurosurgeons have three-dimensional imaging of the inside of these structures without making incisions. This expanded visual field gives neurosurgeons visual access to brain and spine tumors that would otherwise be hidden and to target a specific area, sparing healthy tissue. Surgeons are able to build a 3-D model of the brain or spine that can effectively act as a GPS system, enabling work near critical structures at the finest level of accuracy to minimize risk. This sophisticated technology enables Stamford Hospital neurosurgeons to perform minimally-invasive surgery on the spine, pituitary gland and cranium.
