Our pediatric surgical team delivers a compassionate, family-centered approach to child care. Your child's comfort is our top priority and our staff is committed to making sure both you and your child understand the surgical process every step of the way.
At Stamford Hospital we perform a full range of both in-patient and out-patient pediatric surgical procedures. Some of the more common ones include:
- Appendicitis
- Anal-Rectal Abnormalities
- Chest deformities
- Cysts and twists of the ovary (tortion)
- Cysts of head and neck
- Epigastric hernias
- Inguinal (groin) hernias and hydroceles
- Intestinal abnormalities
- Intussusception (Telescoping of intestine into itself)
- Pyloric stenosis
- Thoracic surgery
- Umbilical hernias
- Undescended testicles
Preparation for Pediatric Surgical Patients and Their Parents
We believe a complete and open discussion of procedures helps alleviate anxiety for the family. Before any kind of pediatric surgery, from simple elective to emergency, the attending surgeon will discuss with you and your child:
- What is going to be done for the child's comfort, benefit and safety during surgery.
- What to expect in terms of recovery and follow-up care after surgery.
Parents are encouraged to stay with their child in the operating room until the child goes to sleep … and to be there in recovery as soon as he or she awakens.
In-Patient Pediatric Surgery
Children having surgery that requires a hospital stay are taken care of in our newly-decorated pediatric care unit where we offer a special kids' menu, a visiting cart with video games and DVDs and a treasure chest toy closet, with each child who spends time on our floor invited to select an age-appropriate gift to take home. Our physician and nursing staff work closely with your primary care physician and our pediatric specialists. This team approach ensures that your child gets the best pediatric care possible.

Day / Out-Patient Pediatric Surgery
Most pediatric out-patient surgery is performed at our convenient Tully Health Center, where there is valet parking, a resource library with internet access, a café and an on-site pharmacy.
Tully Teddy Bear Tours are available ahead of time to help kids learn about their upcoming operation and ask questions. Children and their parents come meet the surgical team and tour the operating room with Teddy, our Tully Bear! Nurses and anesthesiologist will be on hand to answer your questions and create a positive family experience.
We have refreshments and every child will be given a Tully Teddy Bear and coloring book that explains what to expect when they come back for their surgery.
