Minimally Invasive Surgery

What is minimally invasive surgery? It is the application of surgical procedures strategically planned to reduce the injury to the patient while accomplishing the same success rate for a particular operation. In some cases this may mean smaller incisions or it may mean avoiding an injurious process like the heart-lung bypass machine. In all cases the aim is better patient outcomes.

At Stamford Hospital, our surgeons and staff specialize in minimally invasive techniques which are used for a wide range of surgical procedures, across virtually all surgical disciplines. Surgeries that once required extensive hospital stays and long periods for recovery and recuperation are now routinely done utilizing minimally invasive approaches, often on an outpatient basis.

In comparison to conventional open surgery, the advantages of minimally invasive surgery for the patient include:

  • less pain
  • less blood loss
  • faster recovery after surgery
  • better cosmetic results
  • quicker return to full function

Initially "minimally invasive surgery involved a small endoscopic camera and long, thin instruments threaded through natural body openings or small artificial incisions ('keyhole surgery'). Now we use tiny openings, advanced steerable instruments and in some cases robotic platforms like the Da Vinci Surgical System.

Common minimally invasive procedures done here at Stamford Hospital include:
